Mowing can affect the overall health of your lawn.
Mowing can also change how much you water your grass and how and when
you fertilize too. Therefore, it is very important to follow these easy
guidelines to ensure you have a beautiful green lawn which is the envy
of the neighborhood.
It is very important to mow your grass when it is the correct height. Mow only one third of the blade in one mowing. If you cut any more you will weaken the plant. It will shock the grass which in turn will turn yellow as of the lower sheltered parts of the plant get exposed to sun suddenly. And this will shock the root system.
Remember the roots mirror the top part of the plant.
If the roots do not spread, the grass can become less dense on top
leaving spaces in the soil where weeds can easily take hold. As as rule
of thumb, vertically growing grasses are cut taller while spreading
grasses are mowed short. You can check recommended mowing heights for
different grasses if you want to be sure.
The other very important and easy thing you can do to promote better health of your lawn is use a mulching lawn mower blade. A mulching mower allows you to leave grass clippings right in the lawn where they decompose and provide nutrients to your lawn. It is estimated that regular grass clipping can contain up to 6 percent nitrogen, 1 percent phosphorous, 3 percent potassium and as well as some calcium. Obviously, this will also reduce the amount of fertilizer you need for your lawn as it will be getting all natural food.
Remember it is much better to mow your lawn more frequently. Short grass clippings can easily decompose whereas longer blades will just collect and create a mat on top of the lawn. This kind of covering can end up blocking much needed sunlight, water and air to the plants and may lead to the eventual demise of your grass.
