Although most people think the resume is the only thing necessary when applying for a job, a great cover letter can help you get noticed. Here are some tips to writing an eye catching cover letter.
Suggested structure
- Address the letter to a specific person if possible. If the name of the person is not available use their title instead of generic a "To Whom It May Concern" or "Dear Sir or Madam".
- The opening should include exactly why you are writing. State the specific position or department you are applying for and indicate where you learned about this opening.
- The body does not need to repeat everything in your resume. Approximately two paragraphs are ideal. Here you want to describe how your experience and skills match the job opening. State how you did similar tasks and had similar responsibilities in the past and that makes you a great candidate. Mention that your resume, that is attached, has more details.
- The closing should specifically state that you look forward to meeting with the employer. Let them know that you will follow up to set up an appointment.
- The cover letter should be short, concise and professional. Off the wall, flashy letters are not appropriate for the regular business world.
- The paper, font and general style of the cover letter should be the same as your resume.
- It goes without saying that just like your resume, the cover letter should not contain any punctuation, spelling or typographical mistakes.
- Attach the cover letter, resume and references together and mail in a large envelope that will not require you to fold any of the papers. This will help your application stand out even more.
- Make sure you follow up with the call to set up an appointment as you stated.
- Take several copies of all the same documents with you to the interview. This way if additional people are part of the interviewing process you will have copies for all of them.
