Treadmills are very popular exercise machines but are they right for you? Using a treadmill is the same as walking or running in the outdoors and burns the same number of calories but there are definite differences.
Pros
- If you live in a crowded city with no close scenic route to run, a treadmill is a great option. The same logic applies if you tend to only have time to exercise late at night and the streets may not be so safe then.
- Treadmills are great for beginners as you can set your own pace. Start very slow until you build up stamina to adjust to a higher or faster level.
- Treadmills are easier on your joints that running on a pavement. They are more shock absorbing and therefore better for people that experience back pain or have weak ankles or knees.
- You can more easily track your workout with a treadmill. Most of them have a program that will also show you your progress each day.
- When you travel you can still continue your specific workout as most hotels have a treadmill.
- You obviously do not get the benefits of the fresh air from the great outdoors. Although if you are living in a smog filled city this is not a problem.
- Unless you are a big TV watcher and need to catch up on the news or your soap operas, running at home can be extremely boring.
- You do need some balance and need to get into a steady rhythm to stay on the treadmill. Lose your concentration and you will end up on the floor very quickly.
